Weekly ride meetups

Compiled by the Des Moines Bicycle Collective 

Instead of sitting in front of the tube and watching Law and Order reruns, join in the Des Moines-area bike culture on one or more of these weekly rides. Bike lights recommended if you plan to be out past 8 p.m.


VeloRosa Cycling (women) instructional rides. 5:30 p.m. from the Walnut Creek Trail east of 63rd and Grand in Des Moines (Pal Joey’s parking lot). Info: Velorosacycling.com.

Women’s Weekly Mountain Bike Ride. Leave Ashworth Pool (south of Grand at 45th Street) at 5:30. Ride Center Trails and Denman’s Trails. Info: MRuhtenberg@gmail.com.

Indianola Trail Ride. 6:00 pm, beginning May 20 through Labor Day Meet at the CanoeSport Outfitters Store, 203 W. Salem at 6 p.m. Ride all or part of the Summerset Trail; some go as far as Banner Lake, others all the way to Carlisle and return. Led by Canoesport Outfitters and sponsored by Friends of Indianola Trails (FIT) and Indianola Parks & Recreation. Info: kkester@cityofindianola.com


Tuesday Taco Ride. 16 miles roundtrip from Orlondo’s on Park (4337 Park Ave.; near the Great Western Trail) to Cumming. Arrive at Cumming Tap early or you’ll miss chef Sam Auen’s Tacopocalypse. Riders leave Orlondo’s between 5‐6:30 p.m.

VeloRosa Women’s Cycling mountain bike rides (weather permitting) at Ashworth Pool in Des Moines (just south of Greenwood Park). 5:30 pm. Pace varies. Info: Velorosacycling.com.

Tuesday Night Ride. Granddaddy of weekly rides; 50-miler at race pace. Riders often average 30 mph after pedaling out of metro area. Leaves Grounds for Celebration in Beaverdale at 5:30; plan to arrive about 15 minutes early. Info: eeastonwest@aol.com


CITA Taco Ride. About two hours of mountain‐bike riding on Center Trails. Leave at 5:30 p.m. from Rasmussen Bike Shop, 301 Grand, West Des Moines. Refuel with tacos at Giff’s in Valley Junction. No one left behind! Info: centraliowatrails.com.

Cumming Steak Ride. Riders leave between 5:6:30 p.m. from Orlondo’s on Park (4337 Park Avenue; near the Great Western Trail) to Cumming. About 16 miles round-trip. Grill steaks at Cumming Tap.

Wednesday Night Road Ride. Race pace (think 20 mph or faster). Leaves at 5:30 p.m. from the Walnut Creek Trail parking lot east of 63rd on Grand in Des Moines (Pal Joey’s parking lot). The route heads south to Maffitt Road/Browns Woods Road loop – 21-42 miles, depending on how many 7-mile loops you choose.

Kyle’s Wednesday Ride. Meet at 5:30 at Kyle’s Bikes, 1840 SW White Birch Circle, Ankeny. Distance and pace depends on who show shows up; generally at least two groups. Return about 7 p.m.

Adel Steak Night Ride. Jump on the Raccoon River Valley Trail wherever convenient. Grill at Rendezvous Lounge on Adel’s Main Street. Anytime after 5 p.m.


A.S.S. Ride (Ankeny-Sheldahl‐Slater). Meet at Good Times bar in Ankeny around 5:30ish departing for Slater around 6:30ish. Usually includes a stop at the Polk City Station gazebo (half way, on the trail), to collect our thoughts and make sure nothing fell off our bikes and then on to Slater for some dinner and drinks at the Take Down. Officially the ride returns from Slater to Ankeny but the more adventurous souls are welcome to journey on to Madrid the Trestle Bridge and beyond. FYI this is an unsupported ride that takes place mostly after dark so be sure to bring your lights and be safe. Info: assride1@gmail.com
